3. Ruiru 11

A hybrid resistant to coffee leaf rust and berry disease. While it’s not as flavorful as SL28 or SL34, it still delivers a pleasant berry tone with good acidity.

2. SL34

Hybrid Variety: Developed as a hybrid between SL28, SL34, and other varieties, Ruiru 11 was bred to be resistant to diseases such as coffee leaf rust. It has a slightly less complex flavor but still offers good acidity and balanced sweetness.

Details
Origins
Developed from a cross between a
Bourbon variety and a selection from Ethiopia,
it was first introduced in Kenya in the 1930s.
Challenges
Although it produces excellent coffee,
SL28 is susceptible to diseases and pests,
especially coffee berry disease and leaf rust,
making it a bit more difficult to grow compared
to other varieties
